Rodger Dodger is a voice for TV Licence Reform And this column of observations and quotes is a sideways look at how the BBC spends their tax driven funds and the results of their efforts and maybe how it could all be so different and to the benefit of the British Public. Rodger lives in Surrey with a wonderful wife, three beautiful dogs, two televisions, a satelite dish and by law, a wretched TV licence.
APRIL 1998 - Let's Start with BBC RADIO SPORT. Why does it take three commentators for a Radio 5 Live football broadcast? Or should I say two commentators fully employed by the Beeb and a celeb for giving out a summary. In most cases the summary repeats what the commentator just said and confirms to everyone listening that it was goal or a foul. EXTRA COST TO THE TAXPAYER? In the region of three licence fees per game.
The BBC recently appointed EDS, the company founded by Ross Perrot, to sort out the BEEB's accounting system, administration software and basically integrate all of their systems. Good work if you can get it, especially when the fees are in the region of £50million and there were a few companies besides EDS who pitched very hard (or would've given the chance).
REDUCING COST? Why didn't anyone put into the deal that the smart little blue EDS logo could appear on various BBC bumpers (5, 10 or 15 second promos between real programmes, ITV sell 'bumpers') both on Radio and Television now and again for the next few years and REDUCE THE COST TO THE TAX PAYER! There are plenty of promotions on BBC already (and we will get into that much more later on). Do not be hoodwinked into the myth that there is no advertising on the BBC.
